Unix

OS/2 is a multi– programming, multi threading operating System, but it is still a single user operating system. This means that only one person can access the computer’s microprocessor at a time. UNIX is a multi-user, multi-tasking operating system, which means you can have extra keyboards and displays( together forming ’terminals’ ) attached to the computer, with people working at each terminal simultaneously.

UNIX was produced as a research project, Specially designed for programmers. Programmers loved it because it was designed just for them, and had all the features they liked to see in an operating system.

However what programmers like is not exactly the same as what users like. Consequently, companies started modifying UNIX to make it easier to use, and also to add functions demanded by users which were not included in it. Since this was not a single coordinated effort, different non–compatible versions of UNIX proliferated.

XENIX and ALX are the two versions of UNIX seen most often on the micro computer. XENIX comes with Microsoft and generally known as SCO XENIX This is the most common UNIX for micro computers.

Linux

Nowadays, ‘Linux” is considered to be the most successful unix operating system running on personal computers. This operating system can be found in the public domain free of charge. However, linux is even more powerful than commercial unix operating system with regard to same aspects. In particular, most recent research products can be run on linux. This is because, since linux is free, many people world like to use it. Further, due to its wide usage, linux users are not isolated, so linux is as safe as a commercial unix. Linux is also a graphical based operating system.
